Frequently Asked Questions

Our answers to some of the many questions we have been asked over the years.

Where can I find a good club?
We recommend that anyone interested in taking up Ju-Jitsu contact their nearest BJJA club were they can be assured that the instructors are fully qualified, properly insured and that the quality of instruction will be high.

Do you have to be very fit and strong?
The answer is no.  Ju-jitsu is about skill.

Is this the best martial art for self defence?
There are some good styles about, but from a personal point of view very few come close to ju-jitsu.  That said it really does depend a great deal on the individual and what they want to get out of it.

Would ju-jitsu be a good martial art for me to study?
We may be accused of being biased here but the facts do speak for themselves.  Ju-jitsu is a very old martial art from which many other styles have been derived. As ju-jitsu has such a vast array of techniques you can be assured that there is something to suit all abilities.

The problem then comes of finding a good club with instructors that not only allow but encourage you to develop the areas where you can excel, almost always these areas will be those that you enjoy most.  But to find these areas it does mean learning the basics first, as with anything worth having you only get out what you are prepared to put in.

Is one to one training available?
Private tuition can be arranged, this would be subject to discussion with the individual. On a normal club night students train in pairs and are overseen by a black belt.  No techniques are practised without firstly having had them demonstrated, fully explained and discussed.

Do you have beginners' only classes?
Students train within their own grades and abilities.  We run a staggered entry system but beginners usually train together.  Separate training, for beginners only, can be arranged but this would be dependant upon numbers.

Do your students take part in tournaments/competitions?
Yes if they wish to.  Competitions are purely on a voluntary basis, that said any student showing an interest in competing will have the full backing of the club and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Do you teach the history of Martial Arts as well as Physical Training?
Yes, we incorporate some history and why we do things the way we do into every class.

Would I need to invest in any special equipment, if I decide that Ju-Jitsu is for me.
No special equipment is required to start with; a tracksuit would be fine. Any equipment that you decide you may want is available through the club.

We hope these answers have helped to clarify things for you.  A final piece of advice would be for you to go along to a club, speak to the instructors, ask to see their insurance and qualifications, watch a lesson and see if the instructors really know their subject, remember anyone can wear a black belt but that does not give them the in-depth knowledge you are entitled to demand of your instructors.  One of the reasons we are members of the British Ju-Jitsu Association (BJJAGB) is because our black belt gradings are traceable to the National Governing Body Standards.
